Track 16 - Regret Message

Meiko: Well, look at that!  Track 16 is up already!

EliseArainai: Yeah, I kinda got excited.  Hope you don’t mind!

Kaito: Are you kidding?  The readers must be thrilled!

Miku: Think of it as a nice surprise!

EliseArainai: Ha ha, okay.

Kaito: Anyway… Elise-sensei does not own Vocaloid; she just writes stories about us.

Miku/Meiko: Enjoy! ^^

For the first time in a long time, I woke up to complete silence.  No shaking my shoulder, no blare of loud music… nothing.  Not that I was really complaining, but then I looked at the clock and realized… “Oh crap, it’s 9:30?!  I overslept!”

Leaping out of bed, I got dressed as fast as I could, even forgoing my usual make-up.  “Len, why didn’t you wake me up?!” I shouted as I headed for the kitchen only to find that Len wasn’t in there. Of course, that jerk probably went ahead of me, I thought as I rummaged the kitchen looking for something to eat quickly.  I finally found some melon bread and after grabbing my schoolbag, I dashed out the door.

By the time I got to school, it was almost time for third period.  After switching my shoes, I ran up the stairs to the 2nd-year classes until I reached mine.  Peeking in the door, I noticed the teacher wasn’t there yet so I quickly went in and took my seat.

Miki, a friend of mine, noticed me come in.  “Hey Rin-chan, how come you’re so late?  And where’s Len-kun?”

“Eh?  He’s not-?” I cut myself off when I saw that Len wasn’t at his desk.

“Didn’t think he’d be the type to cut class,” Miki commented.  “Did something happen?”

If only you knew, Miki-chan, I thought, recalling what happened last night.

<Flashback>

Everything in my mind was telling me this was wrong.  But it was actually happening; Len and I were kissing!  To be honest, it felt really good, but… it seemed a little fast… Wait, what am I thinking at a time like this?!  He’s my brother, for Pete’s sake!

After a minute, Len finally pulled back leaving me breathless.  “Rin, I…” he began to say.

All reason came back to me in an instant and without thinking, I suddenly slapped him right in the face.  “Len you baka!  Snap out of it!  You can’t just…”  My voice trailed off when I saw Len’s expression.  He looked like a hurt puppy; it was a side that I had never seen before.

“…I’m sorry,” he muttered, hanging his head and closing his eyes.

My mind was a complete mess, and so not knowing what else to do, I simply said, “I-I’m going to bed early!”  I slammed the door behind me before falling onto my bed.  My face was still red, I could feel it, and it took me a while to calm down. Think about it Rin; there are only two reasons Len would’ve kissed you like that.  One, he’s lost his mind; two, he… doesn’t love me like a sibling? I quickly shook my head. No no no!  He’s probably just confused or something.  …And he’s not the only one.

Burying my face in my pillow, I allowed tears of frustration to fall down my cheeks. What am I supposed to do now?!

<End flashback>

“…lo?  Earth to Rin-chan!  Come in, Rin-chan!”

Snapping out of my thoughts, I turned to Miki.  “Oh sorry, I was just thinking.”

“That’s dangerous!” Miki joked, leaning back in her seat.  “Seriously though, class is about to start so don’t space out, okay?”

Despite what Miki said, I couldn’t concentrate at all. If Len isn’t at school or at the apartment, then… where could he have gone?

“The number you have dialed is unavailable…”

“Ugh!  Again?!” I growled, hanging up on the automated message.  It seemed Len had turned off his cell phone, another thing that was not like him.

“Still no luck?” Miku asked and I shook my head in response.  I had gone to the chain link fence hoping that Len would be there, but alas he wasn’t.

“I heard shouting coming from your room last night,” Luka piped up.  “Did you and Len-kun have a fight?”

I flinched at her words and my face immediately reddened.  “S-S-Something like that.”

“Uh-oh, those blushing cheeks seem to have a tale to tell,” Kaiko pointed out.  Ever since Miku introduced the blue-haired girl, she had been joining us for lunch.  “What exactly did you guys fight about?”

I wasn’t sure how to answer that.  I couldn’t exactly say “Well apparently my twin brother is in love with me.  We’ve even kissed!” Sighing, I only said, “It’s complicated.  All I know is I have no idea where he is, and I’m worried about him.”

The other girls didn’t say anything for a minute, but then Miku suddenly hugged me.  “Don’t worry Rin-chan, we’ll find him.”

“Yeah, I’ll call onii-chan and Meiko nee-chan.  They’ll be more than happy to help!” Kaiko added.

“You can count on us, Rin-san,” Luka reassured me, placing a hand on my shoulder.

I nearly cried from all this support.  After what happened between me and Len the night before, did I really deserve such good friends?  “Thank you guys…!” I whimpered, clinging to Miku.

After school we split up to search for Len, using text messages to stay in contact.  Thanks to Kaiko, Kaito and Meiko were also on the lookout, and even Miki offered to help.

“I checked that café he likes.  No one’s seen him since yesterday.  I’ll keep looking! – Miku”

“No luck in the park, either.  Luka-sempai and I pretty much scoured the place. – Kaiko”

“I actually spoke with Len-kun yesterday.  He really seemed bothered by something. – Kaito”

“Ehh?!  Why didn’t you say so sooner?  What’d he say?! – Rin”

“To sum it up, he was asking me about forbidden love.  I know I haven’t spoken to him much, but he didn’t seem like himself. – Kaito”

“Just checked at Crypton; according to Gumi-chan, he didn’t come in to work.  Poor kid, I wonder what’s going through his head right now. – Meiko”

“I’ve asked around the school.  Nobody’s seen him anywhere!  By the way, when this is over… can I have your autograph, Meiko-sama? – Miki”

“MIKI-CHAN! – Rin”

“Sorry, sorry!  Wrong time; I’ll behave myself. – Miki”

“This is all my fault.  If I hadn’t yelled at him, he wouldn’t have disappeared. – Rin”

“No one’s blaming you Rin-san, and I’m sure Len-kun doesn’t blame you either.  We’ll find him, I’m sure of it. – Luka”

“Luka nee-chan’s right.  Len-kun’s our friend, so we’re all worried too!  Hang in there, Rin-chan! – Miku”

I gave a small smile as I read those messages.  However, the sun was setting and I couldn’t keep up the search much longer.  There was one last place I could check, and I dialed the number for my old house.

There were a few rings before someone finally picked up.  “Hello?” my mom’s voice said.

“Hi Mom, it’s Rin,” I greeted.

“Ah, Rin-chan!  It’s been a while, how have you been?” Mom asked, her tone happy.

Taking a deep breath, I told her, “Uh, could be better.  Is Len over there?”

“Eh?  No, I haven’t seen or heard from him,” Mom replied.  “Why, is there something wrong with Len-chan?”

“He’s disappeared, I can’t find him anywhere,” I explained.  “We had a fight, and… I thought he might’ve gone home.”

“N-No, I haven’t seen him,” Mom said, her tone growing more worried.  “Have you called the police?”

“No, he hasn’t been gone very long and my friends and I are looking for him,” I told her.  “I don’t want to make too big a deal of this.  I just know this wouldn’t go over well in the tabloids.”

“Alright dear, but if he stays missing for three days, call the authorities immediately,” Mom instructed.

“I will.  Let me know if you see him, okay?” I requested.

“Of course.  I want to be sure he’s alright just as much as you do,” Mom agreed.  “Talk to you later.  I love you.”

“Love you too, Mom.  Bye.”  And with that, I hung up and headed back to the apartment before it got too dark.

When I got there, I finally noticed something on the coffee table; a note.  I was in such a rush that morning that I hadn’t noticed it before.  I picked up it and immediately recognized my brother’s handwriting.  “It’s from Len!” I exclaimed as I started to read.

“Dear Rin,

I sincerely apologize for my actions last night.  You must’ve been terribly confused, maybe you still are, but you’ll have to wait a little longer before I can explain myself.  I need to get my thoughts together, so I won’t be coming back to the apartment for a while.  Please understand; you are very precious to me and I don’t want to hurt you any more than I already have.  For now, just know that the feelings I have toward you are real and my kiss was in no way meaningless.  I love you, and I will come back to you.  Just please be patient.

Love, Len”

My vision grew blurry as my grip on the note tightened.  It had been written more like a love letter than a note, sweet and selfish at the same time.  But it was those three words that touched my heart: “I love you.”  My eyes squeezed shut and my heart panged when I realized what he had been trying to do that night: he was about to confess his love, throwing caution to the wind and not caring about the fact that we were brother and sister… and I just slapped him in the face and ran.  “Oh Len… I’m so sorry…” I whispered before finally letting the tears fall.

The next day, Miki and I questioned our classmates and other students again, but to no avail.  Len didn’t come back last night, there were no additional letters this morning, and his cell phone was still turned off.  The others had also resumed the search, and I ran into Miku in the street.

“Any luck?” the tealette asked.

“No, nothing yet,” I answered.  “I’ll try the river.”

Before I could leave, Miku called after me and I turned to face her.  “We’ll find him, don’t worry.”

“Thank you so much, Miku-nee!” I said gratefully before running off.

I didn’t know how long I ran, but before I knew it I had reached the river.  Before we had moved to the apartment, Len and I frequently walked along this river on the way to school and back home.

Sliding down the ravine a bit, I then fell back onto the soft green grass by the water.  Just how long has it been since we last walked this way?  Back then we were so happy, even if we got on each other’s nerves every once in a while.  I mean, what siblings don’t?  I closed my eyes as I let out a long sigh. I guess he doesn’t consider us siblings anymore.  I’m still not sure how to respond to his feelings, but… The image of Len’s hurt expression after I had slapped him flashed through my mind. I really hurt him… Even if I do find him, what am I going to say to him?

My thoughts were interrupted when something hit me on the head.  “Ah!  What the…?”  Reaching behind me, I grabbed the object and sat up to take a look at it.  “?  An eggplant?”

“Oh, I’m so sorry!” a voice piped up, and I turned my head to see a certain purple-haired samurai coming my way.  “It must have fallen out of my bag…”  His eyes widened when he recognized me.  “Why hello, Kagamine-dono!  It’s been a while.”

“Hi, Kamui-san,” I greeted, handing the eggplant back to him which he placed back into a bag of groceries.

For those of you who don’t remember, Gakupo Kamui once hid me and my friends in his house to escape some crazy fans.  He used to be known as the Dancing Samurai, a street performer from a couple years ago.  He’s a really nice guy, and one of the most graceful swordsmen I’ve ever seen.  He wasn’t wearing a hakama like last time; instead, he was wearing a… oh what are those called, Jinbaori?  Yeah, that’s it!

Whatever it was, he looked really cool in it.  “Love your outfit!” I commented, quickly putting up a smile.

“Thank you!” he said with a bright smile.  “I had a street performance earlier and I haven’t had time to change yet.  I’m hoping I can make a comeback, and maybe even get into the music industry!”

“Well good luck!” I told him as cheerfully as I could.

Gakupo seemed to notice something was off as his smile faded.  “Is everything alright?  You seem to have a lot on your mind.”

“You can tell?” I asked, and he nodded in response.  I explained everything to him as best I could (well okay, I downplayed the kissing and romance stuff a bit), and he listened patiently.

“Hmm… I admit that’s quite the dilemma,” the older man commented.  “Tell you what, why don’t the two of us look for him together?  Maybe he’s some place you haven’t looked yet.”

My eyes widened.  “You’d do that?!  Thank you so much!”

“Oh it’s no problem at all, Kagamine-dono,” he said with a bow of his head.  “I always try to help ladies in distress.”  I couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh as I started walking down the street beside him.

After searching for a while, we somehow ended up in front of Gakupo’s Japanese-style house.  “Now let me ask you something: of the two of you, who do you believe was at fault, you or your brother?” he questioned.

It took me a minute to get my answer out.  “I’ve been thinking about that, and actually… I think I was the one who was wrong.”

Gakupo arched an eyebrow.  “Oh?  That’s interesting; many who are asked that question are quick to blame the other party.  Why do you say that?”

Taking a deep breath, I started to explain myself.  “Because I… well, I knew something was wrong and I pushed him to tell me without giving him space, even though he kept asking for more time.  I thought that he didn’t trust me and even accused him of such, and when he was finally honest with me… I threw it back in his face.” I squeezed my watery eyes shut, my heart aching due to my mistake.  “I’m such an idiot!  I just want him back… so I can tell him I’m sorry.”

Placing a hand on my shoulder, Gakupo said, “You are a good person, but you make mistakes just like everyone else.  I’m glad you realize what you did wrong, and I’m sure that Len-kun will forgive you.”

Sniffling, I whimpered, “But how can you be so sure?”

“I know… because I spoke to him myself,” the purple-haired man answered, prompting me to look up at him in surprise.  Gakupo then turned to the gate to his house.  “You heard everything, yes?  Then you can come out now.”

The gate opened and out came a very surprised blonde boy.  “…Rin?”

“Len?  Len!” I cried, rushing over to him and tackle-hugging him, forcing him to the ground.  “You’re alright!  I looked everywhere for you!”

Wrapping his arms around me, Len held me close.  “Sorry, guess I made you worry again, huh?”

“Forget that for a minute,” I said as I pulled away a bit, wiping the tears off my face.  “I’m so sorry, Len.  I should’ve been more considerate of your feelings.  I was just confused, and I… I’m really sorry, please forgive me – Ow!”

“Baka,” Len said after rapping my forehead with his knuckles and giving me his usual smile.  “I already have.”

“Now that’s the Len I know!” I exclaimed happily.  “And don’t you dare say you’re sorry; you apologized enough in that letter.”  As the two of us stood up, I said, “We’d better let everyone know that you’re okay.”

“Right.  But before that…”  The blonde boy turned to Gakupo, who was still standing nearby.  “Gakupo-san, thank you for your hospitality,” he said, bowing his head.

“And thank you for helping me find Len!” I added, also bowing.

“You’re very welcome,” the samurai replied with a bow of his own.  “Best of luck to both of you.”

I sent a text message to everyone telling them to meet me in the lobby of Crypton Records.  Sure enough, Miku, Luka, Kaito, Meiko, Kaiko, Gumi and Miki were all there when Len and I returned.

Len gave a small smile and simply said, “I’m back.”

Miku was the first to run up to him.  “Len-kun!  We were all so worried about you!”

“Please don’t scare us like that!” Luka exclaimed, hugging him tightly and causing him to blush from the contact.

“I’m just glad you’re alright,” Kaito said as he and Meiko approached us.

“But don’t ever ever ever run off like that again!” Meiko scolded.  “You nearly gave your big sister a heart attack!”

“Since when were you my big sister again?” Len asked, apparently back to his usual self.  Regardless of his words, he was smiling and happy to be back.  “I’m sorry, everyone.”

Gumi smiled from the sidelines.  “So things turned out alright, after all.  What a relief.”

“Heh, I didn’t think those two would be able to stay away from each other for very long,” Miki commented.  “They’re inseparable, that’s for sure!”

Once everything had calmed down, Miku finally asked, “So why exactly did you run away, Len-kun?”

Uh-oh, I thought, suddenly remembering that there was still one unresolved issue: Len’s feelings of love towards me!  In all the excitement, it had completely slipped my mind!  The two of us glanced at each other, worried looks plastered on our faces. What now?!

Next time…

Len: Mom, there’s something Rin and I have to tell you.

Rin: You probably aren’t gonna believe it when we tell you.

Mom: Actually… there’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you, as well.

Rin/Len: Eh?  What is it?

Mom: I should have told you a long time ago…
